How did you learn about your study abroad program?
I learned about this program from the various fliers I saw hung around campus. When I saw the fliers, I reached out and met with one of the professors leading the trip and we were able to sit down and discuss the trip. After that, I was hooked on the idea of traveling to Madagascar.
Have you traveled internationally before studying abroad?
This was my first time leaving the country, it was a very exciting experience. Everything from the flights to the food to the unique hotels was a unique experience. Having done it once, it is definitely something I would like to do again.
Most memorable experience?
My most memorable experience from the trip was probably walking through the Spiny Forest ecosystem in the southern part of the island at night. Being able to see endemic chameleons, owls, and lemurs while hiking under the Milky Way was an almost magical feeling.
Have scholarships impacted your decision to study abroad?
While I did commit to the trip before I found out about any scholarships, a CALS scholarship did make a huge difference in making this trip more affordable and less stressful. Additionally, since this was my first time studying abroad, they helped pay for part of the passport application process, which was a big help.
What advice would you give to students interested in one of your programs or study abroad in general?
The biggest piece of advice for any students interested in traveling abroad is to keep an open mind and to find joy in a dynamic plan. Being able to experience new sights, foods, and customs is much easier and more enjoyable if you don鈥檛 go into it with any preconceived notions. Sure, you may not choose to order that food if you were back home, but you鈥檙e in a new place, and what better time to try new things?
